Exhibition Review: 90 Years of The Australian Women’s Weekly

A quaint exhibition marking 90 years of The Australian Women’s Weekly in Bendigo.

The iconic choo-choo train cake at 90 Years of The Australian Woman’s Weekly

Running until the 27th of August, this free exhibition honours the contributions of some of the inspiring women who have made the iconic Weekly a magazine for women, by women.

Set inside Bendigo Art Gallery, the exhibition features a selection of gowns by leading Australian designers and worn by notable Australians on recent covers, including Tina Arena, Maggie Beer, and Miranda Tapsell – to name a few – while also diving into the history of the magazine with photographs, memorabilia, home-made garments, and craft and cooking projects on display to take you back a time when crocheting your wedding dress was all the rage.

A standout would have to be the room dedicated to The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book. Nostalgia is written on the walls with various birthday photographs taken of children blowing out the candles of the hard-to-master tip truck cake or the famous ballerina cake. A glorious video of the book’s co-author Pamela Clark will have you chuckling with laughter as she takes us back to the inspiration behind the now-iconic book.

No matter your age, this exhibition has something for everyone and is a must-see for those living in Bendigo or city-slickers wishing for a weekend away. After the exhibition, take a wonder through the rest of the gallery and then enjoy an Italian lunch across the road at Borchelli Ristorante.

90 Years of The Australian Women’s Weekly is showing at Bendigo Art Gallery, 42 View Street, Bendigo VIC until August 27 2023.
